Glenys de Lange
Glenys de Lange will have her next solo exhibition in the gallery in April 2009.
These thick luscious canvases exude the richness of our sub-tropical city. The subject matter is literally the houses, streets, shops, roundabouts and parks of the Brisbane suburbs of Ashgrove, The Gap, Bulimba, Rosalie etc. Glenys has developed a unique and idiosyncratic way of depicting real streets by playing with dimensions and perspective. The formal qualities of pattern and colour work dynamically without ever losing the sense of place. These works are of great charm and have proved very popular.
A street or an area of dwellings provides information about the inhabitants and the lifestyle it encompasses. Glenys is passionate about these dwellings and about paint. She believes that -
"South-east Queensland hasn't really been represented very well through art" and she presents us with her vision deeply rooted in place (as is all great art) in her own suburban landscape. She has lived in Ashgrove for over 20 years.
"Each painting is a story and you read it like a book. They are all highly detailed and jam-packed, with no empty spaces. You start at the top and work your way down." she states.
Glenys studied painting, printmaking and sculpture at the University of Southern Queensland in Toowoomba and has exhibited widely in Southern Queensland. A true "painter" she has also painted on clothing, fabric, lampshades and anything else with an inviting surface.
