Gyorgy Szerencsi
Born in Budapest, Hungary, Gyorgy moved to Australia in 1983. He studied sculpture and painting both in his country of origin and at the University of Southern Queensland.
Due to his life experiences and social background, Gyorgy is interested in creating moments of "displacment" in his work.
His minimalist sculptures are distinctive in their pure clean lines and highly polished contrasting surfaces of black or white marble, glass and metal. These works have a physical presence that involves the viewer in a very positive sense. Gyorgy explores broken narratives, contradictory logic and paradoxes.
He employs architectural elements, stairs, ladders and openings that can lead somewhere or nowhere. The sculpures also explore the concept of scale and the relationships between objects. Some are reminiscent of furniture or models for secret rooms. The element of emotion or atmosphere is always left open-ended.
The works are thus open to a variety of interpretations or alternative readings of event sequences. There exists also a theatricality that is achieved by lighting which adds another dimension to the work. The positive forms create illusions and enigmas, - contemplative spaces open up, emptiness is a palpable presence, silent and meditative areas coexist and thoughts and ideas are continually transferring.
Gyorgy believes that looking at an artwork is a reflection of ourselves, It actively yet unconsciously allows different interpretations of the work based on our own level of understanding and experience.
The sculptures of Gyogy Szerencsi will be on view in the gallery from 1 - 30 March 2008.
The exhibition is entitled "Proximity".
