Julie Shepherd
Julie is a highly acclaimed ceramic artist specializing in fine polished porcelain with pierced or translucent decoration.
She has won many major prizes including the Stanthorpe Regional Gallery AcquisitivePrize 2006. Ipswich Art Awrd 2005, Pine Rivers Award 2003 and Memento Qld Merchandise Awards in 2001, 2002 and 2005.
Julie started using translucent porcelain to express the fragility of the natural environment due to human impact. Her distinctive piercing technique resulted from looking at electron microscope illustrations of the laser structutes within nature.
The piercing process is similar to sewing with a needle and because of this link to traditional feminine textile crafts, has become an expression of her femininity.
The outward impression of her work is of fragility but paradoxically the porcelain has immense inner strength. Julie works with both sculptured and bowl forms.
Julie will be exhibiting new work in August 2011 in the show "Garden Secrets" together with Rhonda Cao and Robyn Bauer.
