Nancy de Normanville
Nancy de Normanville creates closely observed and sensitively rendered female figures in pencils, charcoal and paint. Her figures express a delicacy and tranquility found in meditative states, sleep and the intimacy of rest. They have a haunting yet restful quality that stays with the viewer.
Nancy is based in Brisbane and her entire oeuvre is based on the human figure. She is the mother of two grown-up daughters who have provided her with a wealth of material form which to glean her highly personal subject matter. She has a powerful and original aesthetic in her multi-layered images. They carry the integrity of real people and real experience.
Working mostly from life drawings of figures either clothed or nude, the model's pose and attitude dictate the treatment of each piece. Her quality of line is reminiscent of Egon Shiele in its descriptiveness and sensitivity. The enduring theme in her work is the human form and an appreciation of "how precisely, beautifully and admirably" it is constructed. Her works on paper exist in a precarious state between painting and drawing. This gives them a genuine life force that is palpable.
Nancy is represented in collections in Australia, Italy and America and has won a number of awards.
